Capitan Public Library and Smokey Bear's Hometown Association are 100% Volunteer, Community-Based, Non-Profit Organizations

Capitan Public Library

A small library where big things happen!

Capitan Public Library is a non-profit organization serving greater Lincoln County, New Mexico, including the communities of Capitan, Carrizozo, Lincoln, Nogal, Fort Stanton and White Oaks.

The Building Expansion Campaign continues! The ground breaking was at the end of May 2007 and framing began on July 14th! As for funding, check out the 8' goal thermometer in front of the library to see the exciting progress we have made.

This year Capitan Public Library is partnering with Smokey Bear’s Hometown Association for the auction so that two great projects will benefit. One half of the money raised by the auction will go to the Library and one half to the Playground at the Park.

Smokey Bear’s Hometown Association
Our mission is to "encourage the awareness and appreciation of Smokey Bear's fire prevention messages and to raise money to support and improve the Smokey Bear Historical Park", which is located in Capitan, New Mexico.

Presently we are working on improving the Playground at the Park. The 70's equipment is all metal and limited in functionality.

So Smokey Bear’s Hometown Association, Capitan PTA and many others are working on a renovation. The new equipment will have a forest ranger theme with a lookout tower, a fire pole, a rescue net for climbing up or down to the back of the tower, a child size wooden fire truck, binoculars big enough to crawl through and a combination of tires and ladders for a challenge course of balance and coordination. Additionally there will be a rock climbing wall, both spiral and straight slides, and a row of swings that includes a 360 tire swing.

A playground is an important part of any community, encouraging physical activity in children. The play in playground develops motor skills and social skills. The Smokey Bear Historical Park playground is a public playground open everyday.

One half of the money raised by the auction will go to this important project.
